1. Tires and brakes – safety vs load type?

Apart from checking for cracks, gashes, and plugged holes or cracks, make sure there is a decent amount of tread depth left in the tires. If there is uneven wear, this can mean something may be wrong with the trailer’s axle. 

Single-axle trailers for lightweight goods don’t come with breaks, so no need to worry. But if you’re hauling heavy cargo and looking for a used multi-axle trailer, inspect the brakes, brake pads, and braking system of the trailer to ensure they work correctly.  

2. Suspension and frame – can they handle the load? 

Used trailers for sale might come with suspension issues, so it is best you know what to look out for when selecting the right one for your needs. Investigate the springs for any cracks or signs of repair. Be sure to check each mounting bracket for signs of stress or overloading. Remember to pay close attention to the main parts of the trailer’s suspension unit, like airbags, kettles, and valves.

Be sure to examine the frame of the trailer for signs of major bending, large cracks, bending, holes created by rust, or repairs. 3. Floor and ramp - can they support the weight?  

The ability of the floor to handle a certain amount of weight is crucial for your hauling requirements. Therefore, it is up to you to make certain that the trailer floor is solid and has no signs of rot or decay. Luckily, wooden floors are very easy and cheap to replace. Sometimes, the wooden floor might be up to scratch, but the cross-bracing underneath isn’t, so make sure you take a look at the underfloor support systems for any structural damages or signs of repair. 

Similarly, the trailer ramps need to be able to handle the weight of your cargo being loaded and unloaded. Check the maximum weight capacity with your intended freight to ensure it will handle the pressure. 

4. Electronics 

Lights are a crucial component to inspect in a used trailer. Hook your trailer up and ensure the headlights, interior lights, brake lights, and both blinkers are working properly to ensure driving safety.  

Also, be on the lookout for fraying or other signs of wear and tear on all electrical connections and cables. If you can, call in a qualified technician to help you evaluate the electronics of the trailer.
